Peoples whose traditional religion is held and transmitted specifically within a defined initiatory society: a bounded organization or fraternity that a person must be formally admitted to before gaining access to its religious knowledge and practice. This differs from initiatory priesthood, where entry is specifically into a priestly office, and from initiatory transmission, where the defining fact is a teacher-to-student lineage rather than membership in a bounded society as such.
