Home›Funerary Rituals›Jewish Mourning RitesGroupJewish Mourning RitesJewish funerary and mourning rites are the sequence of halakhic observances that govern the treatment of the dead and the conduct of the bereaved in Judaism, developed from the Hebrew Bible and elaborated by the Mishnah, Talmud and later codes such as the Shulchan Aruch's Yoreh De'ah. Before burial, the chevra kadisha performs tahara, the ritual washing and purification of the body, while a shomer keeps watch over it so it is never left alone. Immediate relatives mark the loss by tearing a garment, a practice called keriah, and observe an intense week of seclusion at home known as shiva, followed by a thirty day period of eased restriction called shloshim, and for the loss of a parent a fuller year of mourning. These stages are distinguished from a single generic bereavement custom by their fixed halakhic sequence and duration, each carrying its own distinct name, obligations and legal source citations in classical rabbinic literature.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonCultural OriginWell-attestedJewish 1Browse ByAll Jewish Mourning RitesJewish Mourning Rites5 entriesJewish Mourning RitesFilter Results5 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-1000 (2)200 (3)FrequencyAllOnce, or at a turning point in a life (5)Life Stage MarkedAllDeath and the disposal of the body (2)Mourning after the funeral (3)ObligationAllObligatory (5)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (5)Social FormAllPerformed alone (2)Performed by a gathered group (3)Practice StatusAllLiving tradition, practised today (1)PractitionerAllAll adherents of the tradition (1)Householders, those living in the world (3)Trained or authorised specialists (1)Native To RegionAllAncient Israel (5)TraditionAllBreslov Hasidism (5)Chabad-Lubavitch (5)Haredi Judaism (5)Hasidic Judaism (5)Modern Orthodox Judaism (5)Orthodox Judaism (5)Originated InAllAncient Israel (5)Kind of ritualAllJewish Mourning Rites (5)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 5KriahFunerary Rituals9 linksShemiraFunerary Rituals10 linksShivaFunerary Rituals10 linksShloshimFunerary Rituals11 linksTaharaFunerary Rituals10 linksSources1.
