The runic alphabets of the Germanic peoples, the futhark scripts cut into stone, wood and metal across Scandinavia and the British Isles. The family runs from the older sequence of twenty-four runes to the reduced Scandinavian series, and the characters also carried names and magical associations. Rune names were remembered in rune poems, which tie each character to a word and a short verse of folk wisdom, and later occultists revived the letters for divination.
