Seeing one's cart dragged back, its oxen held back, and its driver humiliated describes obstruction met along the way, and though there is no good beginning there is a good end, since perseverance through the difficulty of opposition eventually pays off.

The Cart Dragged Back and a Zhou Punishment Recorded Plainly

The third line is the most violent in the hexagram and the classic reports it without commentary. Legge's translation shows a carriage being dragged back while the oxen drawing it are pushed the other way, and the man himself subjected to the shaving of the head and the cutting off of the nose, and then says there is no good beginning but there will be a good end. Those two mutilations were penal practices of the period the text comes from, sentences carried out on the body and legible to anybody who saw the person afterwards, and they are given here as the text has them rather than turned into a figure of speech.

The weight of the line lies past the punishment, in the sequence. Everything about the beginning is obstruction: the vehicle held from in front, the animals held from behind, and the driver marked in a way that cannot be undone. The classic softens none of it and explains none of it, and then it says the end will be good. What the line describes is a course stopped at every point of its outset that completes regardless.

The stroke is yielding in an odd place and incorrectly seated at the top of the lower trigram Dui, hemmed between the strong second line below and the strong fourth above, which is the structural reason it is caught from both directions at once. Its proper correlate is the topmost line of the hexagram, and that is where the good end comes from. Nothing in the third line's own position produces the reversal. It arrives from the one place in the figure that is looking straight at it.

A Beginning That Has Already Gone as Badly as It Will

Six in the third place is the hardest reading in Opposition and it is not a warning. The querent is shown a cart dragged back, oxen forced the other way, and a man bearing the marks of two judicial punishments of the period, the shaving of the head and the cutting off of the nose, and is then told there is no good beginning but a good end. The verdict is favourable, and the route to it runs through everything named before it.

The period detail should be given as it stands rather than converted into a modern equivalent, because its function in the line is specific: these were sentences that made a person permanently identifiable as having been punished. What the line adds is a refusal to treat the mark as the outcome. The obstruction and the humiliation are both real, both early, and neither is where the line finishes, and a reading landing here is being told that the beginning has already gone as badly as it is going to go.

When the line changes, the lower trigram Dui becomes Qian and the figure becomes Great Possession, King Wen 14, fire above heaven, one yielding line holding five strong ones and the classic's picture of abundance kept in good order. That is as complete a reversal as the classic offers anywhere. It is the good end this line promises, reached from the worst position in the hexagram and by nothing the third line manages to do for itself.
