The wall falls back into the moat from which it was raised, and using troops here is pointless, since when peace decays toward its opposite, only a quiet, corrected order within one's own town avoids humiliation.

The Line Statement and the Wall Returned to the Moat

Legge's translation of the sixth and topmost line describes the city wall falling back into the moat from which the earth to build it was originally taken, and states plainly that it is not the time to use the army, though one may still announce one's orders within one's own city, and that even firm correctness here brings occasion for regret. Where the earlier lines built and maintained a genuine peace, this final line watches that structure return to the raw ground it was raised from.

Six at the top closes Kun, the upper trigram of Earth, at its highest place, with no line above it to answer to, and the image of collapse is deliberate rather than accidental, a peace that has run its full course and begun to revert toward the very undifferentiated ground the Judgment's great coming and small going first departed from. Legge's caution against using the army marks this collapse as internal exhaustion rather than external attack, a condition no show of force can reverse.

Set against the whole arc of Peace, from grass roots rising together to a sovereign's humble marriage, the sixth line is the hexagram's honest acknowledgment that no harmony, however well built, escapes eventual decline, and its counsel, order what remains within one's own walls rather than reaching for what is already lost, is offered without pretending the regret named can be entirely avoided.

The Wall Falling Back into Its Moat, and the Firmer Ground After

Six at the top, as a changing line, marks the point where a well established peace begins to revert toward the disorder it once replaced, the city wall falling back into the moat it was raised from. A querent shown this line is warned against using force to hold the situation together, since Legge's text is explicit that this is not the time for the army, and is counseled instead to keep order only within what remains directly one's own, accepting that some regret is unavoidable even for firm and correct conduct here.

Flipping this line changes the upper trigram from Kun to Gen, Mountain, giving Gen over Qian, the hexagram called Great Taming. The collapse of a wall back into its moat gives way, on the far side of change, to a hexagram of accumulated strength restrained by something as solid and enduring as a mountain, the very structure that just gave way replaced by a far more stable form of holding. The movement suggests that what looks like final decline can, once changed, become the ground for a sturdier, more deliberately restrained accumulation than the peace that has just ended.

As the final line of Peace's arc, this position closes the hexagram's whole movement from rising connection to established harmony to eventual reversion, the natural end that even heaven and earth's communication cannot indefinitely postpone. A reading falling here suggests the present phase is ending, and that what follows, rather than repeating the collapse, may instead be built on firmer, more consciously restrained ground.
