Standstill, Line 3

The third line of Standstill is the shortest in the hexagram and the most uncomfortable. Legge's translation shows the subject ashamed of the purpose folded within the breast, and the small commentary gives the cause without softening it: the shame arises from the inappropriateness of the line's position. Nothing has been done wrong in any outward act. What is being carried is an intention that cannot be avowed, held by someone occupying a place they are not fit for.

Yielding in an odd position at the top of the lower trigram Kun, the line stands where earth and heaven have already separated, at the highest point of the closed lower half and directly beneath the strong lines that have withdrawn upward. It is the most exposed of the three yielding lines and the least correctly placed. Whatever ambition or design it holds has to stay concealed, because the position gives it no standing from which the design could be declared.

The line adds something the hexagram's earlier counsel of patient endurance does not contain. Enduring a stagnant time honestly is one thing; enduring it while harboring a purpose one is unwilling to state is another, and the text marks the difference by naming shame rather than misfortune. No calamity is predicted. What is predicted is the private cost of holding a position under false pretenses, which in this figure is treated as a real consequence and not merely a feeling.

Six in the third place is read as an internal warning rather than an external one. As a changing line it tells a querent that they are in a position they are not suited to and are keeping something back that they would not defend if it were brought into the open. The line forecasts no disaster. It reports discomfort with a cause, and the cause is the mismatch between the place occupied and the person occupying it.

Flipping this yielding stroke to firm turns the lower trigram Kun into Gen, mountain, and heaven over mountain gives Retreat, King Wen 33, a hexagram about withdrawing in good order while withdrawal is still possible and still honorable. The transformation supplies the remedy the line itself does not state. What resolves shame arising from an unfit position is to leave the position, deliberately and without drama, rather than to hold on and go on concealing the reason for holding on.

A reading landing here asks for an honest audit before anything else. The querent is counseled to identify what they are not saying and why, and to treat that concealment as information about whether the role still fits. Retreat, in the figure this line produces, is explicitly not defeat: it is timed withdrawal that preserves standing, and it is available here only while the concealed purpose remains something the querent is ashamed of rather than something they have already acted on.
