The dragon appears in the field, now visible to others, and it is advantageous to seek out a great or capable person to work with at this stage. Legge renders it as the dragon appearing in the field, no longer hidden, and the line advises seeking out a great man because the second place is where capacity first becomes visible to others.

The Line Statement and the Dragon in the Field

Where the first line kept its dragon submerged, the second brings it into view. Legge's translation gives the dragon appearing in the field, and states plainly that it will be advantageous to meet with the great man. The shift in imagery, from the hidden deep to open ground, marks the moment latent capacity becomes visible activity. The dragon is no longer merely present; it is now seen, and being seen changes what is required of it.

This line occupies the second place of the lower trigram Qian, a central position within that trigram and traditionally read as the place of a capable minister or an emerging figure who has not yet reached the highest office. The field itself is an image of the ordinary world rather than the sky the dragon will later command: open, level, shared ground where the dragon's power can be tested against other things and other people for the first time.

The advice to meet with the great man carries a double reading in the commentary tradition. The dragon in the field may itself be the great man others should seek, or it may still need a greater figure above it, a teacher or patron, to guide capacity newly made visible. Either reading agrees that visibility alone accomplishes nothing without relationship: strength shown in the field must find the right person to work beside, or the field becomes merely a stage with no one to watch it.

Permission to Be Seen and the Company Strength Must Seek

Nine in the second place answers a question with permission rather than restraint. Having withheld action at the first line, The Creative now shows its dragon visible and moving, and the divinatory sense of the line is that whatever was gathering in secret may now be shown, tested, and brought before others. The explicit counsel to meet with a great man marks this as a line about relationship as much as about timing: strength alone, however real, is not yet sufficient, and the line asks the querent to seek a partner, mentor, or patron equal to the moment.

The second place sits at the center of the lower trigram, a position commentary tradition associates with capable service rather than final authority, so a reading landing here often points to a phase of growing responsibility that has not yet reached its highest expression. Compared to the buried potential of the first line, this is unmistakable forward motion, but it is motion still bounded by the lower trigram's limits, not yet the full flight the fifth line will later describe.

Read against the hexagram's overall arc, the second line functions as the first real test of the strength that the first line preserved: capacity now shown publicly, and judged by how well it finds and uses the right company. A changing line here signals that the immediate task is less about further concealment and more about choosing wisely whom to approach and be seen by, since the field, unlike the deep, is shared ground.
