Standing Uma / Parvati (Saint Louis Art Museum, 146:1966)

Hindu Art

A bronze sculpture of the goddess Uma, also known as Parvati, the consort of Shiva, made in eleventh century Chola dynasty South India and held by the Saint Louis Art Museum, accession 146:1966, funded by the Merrill Trust Foundation. She stands in the relaxed triple bend pose characteristic of Chola bronze imagery, adorned with anklets, bracelets, armbands, a multi-layered necklace and a tall crown, likely paired originally with a matching image of Shiva. Small holes pierced through its base held the poles used to carry the image on a palanquin through town in festival procession, after it had first been ritually bathed, perfumed and dressed, so that the public could receive the goddess's presence as a visiting royal guest.
