The Ramakrishna Order is a Hindu monastic lineage established in January 1886 when Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa gave the ochre cloth of renunciation to twelve of his close disciples at Cossipore House. Following Ramakrishna's death in August 1886, Swami Vivekananda and other disciples founded Baranagar Math, the order's first monastery, in September 1886, and Vivekananda formally organized the Ramakrishna Math in 1897, with headquarters later established at Belur Math near Kolkata. The order operates alongside two related institutions: the Ramakrishna Math, which trains monks and provides spiritual guidance, and the Ramakrishna Mission, which runs the order's charitable work in education, medicine and disaster relief. The order today maintains more than 166 centers across the Indian subcontinent and in Europe, Russia, Japan, South America, Africa, Canada and the United States. There is also a parallel organisation, the Ramakrishna Mission, which performs the charitable work including, orphanages, hospitals, clinics, primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities - as well as disaster relief and economic development in villages.
