Abd al-Ghani ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi, who lived from 1146 to 1203, was a classical Sunni Islamic scholar and a prominent hadith master born in the village of Jummail in Palestine. He studied with scholars in Damascus, many of them his own relatives, including the Sufi teacher Abdul Qadir al-Jilani, and he was the first person to establish a school on Mount Qasioun near Damascus. He was related to the scholar Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi through their mothers, who were sisters, and his cousin Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi described him as a lifelong friend in the pursuit of knowledge who consistently outpaced him in goodness. His three sons, Muhammad, Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, all became prominent scholars, and he himself wrote Al-Kamal fi Asma al-Rijal, a biographical dictionary of hadith narrators.
