Abu Hayyan al-Gharnati

Abu Hayyan Athir al-Din al-Gharnati, whose full name was Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Ali ibn Yusuf ibn Hayyan, lived from November 1256 to July 1344 and was an Andalusian Sunni Islamic scholar regarded as the leading Quran commentator and foremost Arabic grammarian of his era, as well as its best scholar of Quranic recitation. He was also recognized for his scholarship in Islamic jurisprudence, hadith and history. His magnum opus, Al-Bahr al-Muhit, is the most important reference on Quranic expressions and on the grammar, vocabulary, etymology, recitation and manuscript transmission of the Quran, and he was unusual among Arabic linguists of his time for his strong interest in non-Arabic languages, writing several works of comparative linguistics for Arabic speakers.
