Behafarid

Zoroastrian Figures

Behafarid, also spelled Behafarid or Bihafarid, was an eighth century Persian Zoroastrian heresiarch who led a religious peasant revolt blending elements of Zoroastrianism and Islam, known as the Behafaridians. He held to Zoroaster and upheld Zoroastrian institutions, but his followers prayed seven times a day facing the sun, avoided intoxicants, kept their hair long, and forbade the sacrifice of cattle except when the animal was already decrepit. The Abbasid general Abu Muslim crushed his revolt and had him executed by hanging, though his followers believed he would return. Some of his followers later joined the rebellion led by Ustadh Sis.
