Chilean psychiatrist who transformed Oscar Ichazo's Arica teaching of ego fixations into the Enneagram of personality as psychology knows it, mapping the nine points onto clinical character structures and teaching the system to the Berkeley groups from which nearly every modern Enneagram lineage descends. A Gestalt therapist trained under Fritz Perls at Esalen, he spent his later decades integrating psychotherapy, meditation and his SAT program of seeker training.

From Valparaiso to Arica

Claudio Naranjo was born in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1932, trained in medicine and psychiatry, and moved through an unusually wide scientific and countercultural world: research fellowships at Harvard and at Berkeley's Institute of Personality Assessment and Research, early studies of psychedelics in psychotherapy, and apprenticeship in Gestalt therapy under Fritz Perls at Esalen, where he became one of the institute's central teachers after Perls's departure. By 1970 he was an established bridge figure between clinical psychology and the human potential movement, which is what made his next journey so consequential.

That year he joined the group of Americans who traveled to Arica in northern Chile to study under Oscar Ichazo, whose Protoanalysis taught a map of nine ego fixations arranged on the enneagram figure. Naranjo left the Arica school after months rather than years, on terms that stayed contested between the two men for the rest of their lives, but he took the seed of the nine fixations with him. Back in Berkeley he began teaching a version filtered through his own clinical formation to a small group he called Seekers After Truth, after Gurdjieff's phrase. From those Berkeley groups, through students including Jesuits who carried it into retreat work, descend nearly all the modern Enneagram lineages, a transmission history the atlas records on the Enneagram entry itself.

Character and Neurosis, and the Later Work

Naranjo's distinctive contribution was to make the nine points psychological. Where Ichazo's teaching presented the fixations within an esoteric program of his own design, Naranjo cross mapped them onto the character structures of the clinical literature, psychoanalytic character types, personality disorder patterns, Karen Horney's interpersonal moves, and described each point as the organization of a driving passion with a cognitive fixation, further differentiated by the three instincts into twenty seven subtypes. His 1994 book Character and Neurosis: An Integrative View is the fullest statement, and its vocabulary, the passions and virtues, the subtypes, the lines of movement read psychologically, remains the working language of most serious Enneagram teaching.

Around the psychology he kept a larger project. His SAT program, revived in the late 1980s and carried across Latin America, Spain and Italy, combined Enneagram work with Gestalt practice, interpersonal meditation, music and guided work on childhood material, aiming at what he called the transformation of consciousness rather than mere typology, and he grew publicly critical of the commercialized Enneagram of workshops and airport books. He wrote steadily on meditation, on psychedelic assisted therapy decades before its revival, and late in life on education, arguing that schooling starves the affective and spiritual capacities of children. He died in 2019, honored across the Enneagram world as the teacher who, more than anyone, had made the symbol a mirror of character; how his system relates to Ichazo's original remains part of both men's stories, and the atlas keeps their entries linked.

Enneagram, Disciplines

Transformed Ichazo's teaching of nine fixations into the Enneagram of personality, cross mapped onto clinical character structures; nearly all modern lineages descend from his Berkeley SAT groups.

Naranjo studied under Ichazo at Arica in 1970 and carried the nine fixations into psychology in his own elaborated form; the terms of the parting and the extent of the debt stayed contested between them.
