Michael D. Gordin's A Well-Ordered Thing: Dmitrii Mendeleev and the Shadow of the Periodic Table (Basic Books, 2004) documents that Mendeleev chaired the Russian Physical Society's Commission for the Investigation of Mediumistic Phenomena in 1875 and 1876, formed after colleagues including the chemist Alexander Butlerov and the zoologist Nikolai Vagner became convinced Spiritualists. The Commission spent months running controlled trials of leading Spiritualist mediums under conditions built to rule out concealed mechanical trickery, and concluded in its 1876 report, published by Mendeleev as Materials for a Judgement about Spiritualism, that the phenomena it examined were produced by unconscious muscular movement or by conscious deception. A Chemist Confronts the Seance

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on 8 February 1834 in Tobolsk, Siberia, and built his scientific reputation on the periodic table of the elements, first presented in 1869, which organized the known elements by atomic weight and recurring chemical property into a system with predictive power: it correctly forecast the existence and properties of several elements not yet discovered. That same period of Mendeleev's career coincided with a wave of fashionable interest in Spiritualism among the St Petersburg aristocracy and, to Mendeleev's particular alarm, among some of his own scientific colleagues, most notably the chemist Alexander Butlerov and the zoologist Nikolai Vagner, both of whom had become convinced Spiritualist sympathizers.

Mendeleev regarded this as a direct threat to the authority of scientific method itself, and in 1875 he successfully pressed the Russian Physical Society to establish a formal Commission for the Investigation of Mediumistic Phenomena, which he chaired. The Commission spent months conducting controlled trials of prominent mediums, including the well known Spiritualist performers of the day, under conditions designed to rule out the concealed mechanical trickery Mendeleev suspected was responsible for the phenomena reported in ordinary seances.

Materials for a Judgement About Spiritualism

The Commission concluded in 1876 that the mediumistic phenomena it examined were produced either by unconscious muscular movement or by conscious deception, and that, in the words of its report, Spiritualist doctrine was superstition. Mendeleev set out the case in detail in his own subsequent publication, Materials for a Judgement about Spiritualism, treating the episode as a model of how established science should respond to a popular supernatural claim: not by refusing to look, but by looking under carefully controlled conditions and publishing the result.

The verdict did not end Spiritualism's popularity in Russia, and Mendeleev's colleagues Butlerov and Vagner, both members of the Commission itself, remained unconvinced by its conclusions, a genuine and documented scientific disagreement rather than a settled consensus even within the investigating body. The episode places Mendeleev, alongside later twentieth century figures such as Paul Kurtz and James Randi, within a specific historical lineage of scientists who treated paranormal claims as directly testable propositions rather than matters of taste, and who used their own institutional standing to organize a formal test.

Mendeleev framed the episode as a matter of scientific responsibility: a science confident enough to organize matter into a periodic law owed the public a rigorous, open test of a popular claim rather than private dismissal from the sidelines.
