Doreen Virtue

Doreen Virtue, born Doreen Hannan in April 1958 in Southern California, worked as a psychotherapist before a 1995 carjacking she described as an angelic intervention redirected her toward tarot readings and New Age publishing. Over the next two decades she became one of Hay House's most prolific authors, publishing more than fifty books and dozens of divination card decks built around angels, ascended masters, fairies and saints, drawing eclectically on Christian, Hindu, Celtic and Native American imagery. She held a masters degree in counseling psychology from Chapman University and a doctorate in psychology from California Coast University.

In February 2017 she was baptized by an Anglican priest in Hawaii and announced a conversion to fundamentalist Christianity, publicly renouncing the angel and oracle work that had built her career. She began warning former readers to stop using her own card decks, calling the practices spiritually dangerous, and pulled many of her New Age titles from print.

She went on to earn a further masters degree in biblical and theological studies from Western Seminary in Portland in 2021, and now produces Christian teaching content built specifically around examining the New Age movement she once led. The reversal split her former audience, with some readers following her into Christianity and others continuing to use the decks and books she now disavows, which remain widely in print and in use today independent of her current views on them.

After her 2017 conversion, Doreen Virtue did not simply stop producing New Age material and move on; she turned publicly against the specific decks that had built her career, telling former readers that Angel Therapy Oracle Cards, Ascended Masters Oracle Cards and the rest of her card catalog were spiritually dangerous and should be set aside entirely. Hay House pulled a number of her titles from print in response, but the withdrawal was partial rather than total: many of her decks, along with the Fairy Tarot Cards and Guardian Angel Tarot Cards she had co-created with Radleigh Valentine, remained in active circulation, sold secondhand and by other retailers regardless of her change of position.

The reception split rather than followed her. Some former readers treated her reversal as a serious, considered warning from someone who had spent two decades inside the practice and now saw it differently, and set the decks aside. Others read the same warning as an artifact of her new religious commitments rather than as new evidence about the cards themselves, and kept using books and decks she had already published without adopting her later view of them. Coverage of the episode, including The Wild Hunt's contemporary account, framed it explicitly as a debate rather than a settled verdict, a rare case of a bestselling author publicly repudiating her own body of work while that work continued selling under her name.

Valentine, her closest collaborator on the angel card genre, has continued working in it since without adopting her reversal, so the same publishing partnership now sits on both sides of the divide it produced.
