Godrej Sidhwa

Zoroastrian Figures

Ervad Godrej Sidhwa (1925 to 4 June 2011) was a Zoroastrian priest born in Karachi, Pakistan, who studied the Avesta, Pahlavi, Persian and Pazend languages along with ancient Iranian literature at the M. F. Cama Athornan Institute in Andheri, Mumbai, over six years. He was initiated into the Zoroastrian priesthood through the Navar and Maratab ceremonies at the Iranshah Atash Behram in Udvada, India, earning him the title Ervad. He taught Zoroastrianism and ancient Iranian history at the B. V. S. Parsi High School and Mama Parsi Secondary School in Karachi from the early 1960s until his death, and was later appointed Honorary Lecturer in Zoroastrian Theology and an examiner in the subject for the University of Karachi. He lectured on Zoroastrianism across India, Pakistan, Iran, Canada, Britain, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, including at the University of California, Berkeley, and took up many of the religious and social duties of Dasturji M. N. Dhalla after Dhalla's death.
