Helmut Schmidt was a German-born physicist who moved psi testing off the card table and onto electronic hardware. Working at the Boeing Scientific Research Laboratories in the late 1960s, he built random number generators driven by radioactive decay, on the argument that a quantum process is the one source of randomness no subject could predict by ordinary means, and reported that subjects could nonetheless shift the output. His 1969 paper Precognition of a Quantum Process set the pattern for the whole later literature of micro-psychokinesis, including the Princeton programme. He went on to direct research at the Institute for Parapsychology in Durham and at the Mind Science Foundation in San Antonio. Meta-analysis of the field he founded has since found the reported effect shrinks as studies grow larger, which is the signature of publication bias rather than of a physical effect.

Radioactive Decay as an Unguessable Target
Schmidt's innovation was to choose a target that physics says cannot be predicted. Card guessing had always been open to the objection that a deck carries traces of its own order, in the shuffling, the wear on the cards, the habits of the person handling them, and that a subject might exploit those without anyone intending it.
Schmidt, working as a physicist at the Boeing Scientific Research Laboratories in the late 1960s, built machines whose output was determined by the timing of individual radioactive decay events, a quantum process for which no theory permits a predictive shortcut. A subject pressed a button to try to make the machine favour one outcome, or tried to guess which outcome was coming, and the device recorded everything automatically without a human scorer. He reported that subjects could do it, at rates a fraction of a percent above chance sustained over very large numbers of trials. The design was widely admired on its merits even by those who did not accept the results, because it removed at a stroke several of the loopholes that had dogged the Duke work, and it set the template for everything that followed in micro-psychokinesis, including the Princeton programme a decade later.
What Happened to the Field He Started
A good instrument does not settle a question by itself, and the literature Schmidt founded has followed a trajectory that is now familiar. Individual studies, his own included, reported small positive effects. Replications by other laboratories were fewer than the field claimed and more mixed than its summaries suggested.
When Bösch, Steinkamp and Boller pooled the random generator literature in a meta-analysis published in Psychological Bulletin in 2006, they found a small overall effect that was statistically significant and, decisively, an inverse relationship between effect size and sample size: the biggest deviations came from the smallest studies and the largest studies came closest to chance. That pattern is the standard fingerprint of publication bias, and the authors concluded the data were better explained by selective reporting than by psychokinesis.
Proponents, including researchers at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, disputed the modelling and argued the correction had been applied too aggressively. Schmidt himself continued to publish, later directing research at the Institute for Parapsychology in Durham and at the Mind Science Foundation in San Antonio, and he never accepted that his effect had been explained away. The dispute about the pooled literature remains open; the difficulty of getting a clean independent replication of a single Schmidt-style result does not.
