Harold Samuel Kushner was an American rabbi, author and lecturer, born on 3 April 1935 and dead on 28 April 2023 at the age of 88. A member of the Rabbinical Assembly of Conservative Judaism, he served as congregational rabbi of Temple Israel of Natick, in Natick, Massachusetts, for 24 years. He gained wide recognition for popular books that simplify complex theological ideas for Jewish and non-Jewish readers, including When Bad Things Happen to Good People, which deals with human suffering, divine kindness and theodicy and was written after his son died of progeria, and When All You've Ever Wanted Isn't Enough. He argued against the notion of an omnipotent, interventionist God and focused instead on God's role in offering comfort and solace to those who suffer.
