Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, born Mahesh Prasad Varma in central India around 1917 or 1918, studied physics before spending over a decade as a disciple of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath in the Advaita Vedanta lineage, and after his teacher's death in 1953 began developing and teaching a simplified meditation technique he called Transcendental Meditation, using a personally assigned mantra practiced for short periods twice daily. He founded the Spiritual Regeneration Movement in India in 1957 and began teaching internationally soon after, gaining wide public attention in the West after The Beatles and other public figures studied with him in the late 1960s, and went on to build a large international organization including Maharishi International University, now Maharishi University of Management, in Fairfield, Iowa. He died in the Netherlands in 2008, and Transcendental Meditation continues today as an active, organized practice taught by instructors trained within the movement he founded.

Lifespan or FloruitHis birth is recorded in biographical sources as around 1917 or 1918 in central India; no civil birth record survives to fix the exact year, and the earlier of the two commonly cited years is recorded here. Lifespan or FloruitMaharishi Mahesh Yogi's death in the Netherlands in 2008 is firmly dated, but his birth year is not settled: the record gives a range between 1911 and 1918 in circulation, and his own name at birth, Mahesh Prasad Varma, and his origin-place carry a similar discrepancy between his own passport and disciple-derived accounts. Paul Mason's Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: The Biography of the Man Who Gave Transcendental Meditation to the World (Premanand, 2020) is the source recording this range of circulating birth dates rather than resolving it to one. 1 Place of OriginHis own passport gives "Pounalulla," India. Disciple-derived accounts instead place his birth in the village of Chichli near Jabalpur, in what was then the Central Provinces of British India (now Madhya Pradesh). 1 Paul Mason's Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: The Biography of the Man Who Gave Transcendental Meditation to the World (Premanand, 2020) compares the Maharishi's own passport, which gives his birthplace as Pounalulla, India, against disciple-derived biographical accounts that instead place his birth in the village of Chichli near Jabalpur. Mason's biographical method, checking official documents against movement-produced hagiography, finds the sources also disagree on his birth year, variously given as 1911, 1917 or 1918, compounding the location uncertainty, and concludes no consensus exists because the Maharishi himself, as a monastic renunciate, deliberately relinquished and did not correct conflicting accounts of his pre-monastic identity and family background. From Physics Graduate to Disciple of the Shankaracharya
Before he became known by the honorific Maharishi, meaning great seer, the man born Mahesh Prasad Varma completed a degree in physics at Allahabad University in the early 1940s, an unusual academic background for a figure who would later be remembered chiefly as a spiritual teacher. Rather than pursuing a scientific career, he became a close disciple of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, who held the position of Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, one of the four major monastic seats established within the Advaita Vedanta tradition attributed to the eighth century philosopher Adi Shankara, and spent roughly thirteen years studying under him in the Himalayas.
Brahmananda Saraswati died in 1953, and after a period of further retreat, Mahesh began developing what he described as a simplified, easily learned form of meditation drawn from this Advaita Vedanta background but presented in largely non technical, non sectarian language, centered on the silent mental repetition of a mantra selected for the individual practitioner and practiced for about twenty minutes twice a day. He began teaching this method publicly in India from 1955 and founded the Spiritual Regeneration Movement in 1957 as a formal vehicle for spreading it, marking the start of a teaching career that would take him, within little more than a decade, from regional Indian religious circles to global public attention.
Teaching a Technique to the World
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi began teaching outside India in the late 1950s and built a growing following through the 1960s, but his public profile changed dramatically in 1968 when The Beatles and several other prominent musicians and public figures travelled to his ashram at Rishikesh in northern India to study Transcendental Meditation directly with him, a stay that generated enormous press coverage and introduced the technique to a mass Western audience almost overnight. He used the resulting attention to expand a formal teaching organization built around standardized instructor training, so that Transcendental Meditation could be taught consistently by certified teachers rather than only by Maharishi himself, and this organizational structure allowed the movement to grow rapidly across North America, Europe and elsewhere through the 1970s.
In 1971 the movement founded Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, later renamed Maharishi University of Management, offering a full curriculum alongside instruction in the technique, and Maharishi continued expanding the movement's institutional and commercial reach for the rest of his life, including ventures in Vedic architecture and Ayurvedic health products. He relocated in his final years to the Netherlands, where he died in 2008. Transcendental Meditation remains an active, organized practice today, taught through the same instructor certified structure Maharishi established, and the specific mantra assigned to an individual practitioner continues to be transmitted only through personal instruction within that structure rather than published as general information, a point this entry states as a fact about how the practice is currently taught rather than as an assessment of its content.
