American former US Army officer and, for nine years, a senior member of Anton LaVey's Church of Satan, who left that organization in 1975 to found the Temple of Set, a distinct religious body that reframes the LaVeyan symbolic Satan as Set, an Egyptian derived being it holds to be objectively existent, worshipped as a principle of separate, self aware individual consciousness rather than merged divinity.

Soldier and Satanist
Michael Aloysius Aquino was born on 16 October 1946 in San Francisco, California. He served in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam, and built a long parallel career in military intelligence and psychological operations, eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and holding a doctorate in political science; that military and intelligence career, and its later public scrutiny, exists as a documented strand of his life separate from his religious leadership. He joined Anton LaVey's Church of Satan in 1969 and rose within it to become one of its most senior priests, editing its internal publications for several years.
By 1975 Aquino had come to believe that LaVey's leadership had grown more commercially than spiritually focused, and he and a group of allied senior members formally broke from the Church of Satan that year. Aquino described receiving, during a solitary ritual working, a text he called The Book of Coming Forth by Night, which he presented as a communication from Set that provided the doctrinal basis and name for the new organization he founded in the same year, the Temple of Set. He led the Temple for decades afterward and died on 1 September 2019.
The Temple of Set
Where LaVey's Satanic Bible had presented Satan explicitly as a psychological symbol rather than an objectively existing being, Aquino's Temple of Set reversed that framing, holding Set, derived from the Egyptian deity of the same name, to be a real, separate intelligence that had guided human self awareness across history under various names, of which Satan was only the most recent and most misunderstood. The Temple describes its central goal as Xeper, an ancient Egyptian term it uses to mean the deliberate, isolate development of the individual's own separate consciousness, distinguishing its aims explicitly from any tradition oriented toward dissolving the self into a larger unity.
The 1975 split between LaVey's Church of Satan and Aquino's Temple of Set remains the founding schism of organized modern Satanism and its closely related Left-Hand Path successor movement, dividing the field along the same symbolic-versus-literal line the two men themselves drew at the time. The Temple of Set continues to operate as an initiatory order under later leadership, and the atlas describes its history and doctrine here without offering instruction in its closed initiatory material.
Aquino himself became the subject of a separate, unrelated 1987 criminal investigation into allegations of child abuse at a Presidio day care facility; no charges were ever filed against him and the case was closed without prosecution, but it remains a documented and contested part of the public record around him distinct from his religious work, and this entry notes it for completeness rather than treating it as settled fact in either direction.
