Shaykh al-Saduq, whose full name was Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Babawayh al-Qummi and who is also called Ibn Babawayh, was a leading Twelver Shia traditionist and jurist. He was born in Qom after 305 AH, probably about 311 AH (923 CE), and died in Ray in 381 AH (991 CE). Encyclopaedia Iranica calls him the most eminent traditionist and jurist of the school of Qom. He travelled widely in Persia, Iraq and Transoxiana, and some 300 works are listed under his name. He is the author of Man la yahduruhu al-faqih, composed in Balkh, one of the four authoritative books of Imami Shia hadith, which is why he appears here as the compiler of that collection.
