Sundaramurti

Hindu, Jain & Yogic Teachers

Sundaramurti was a Tamil Shaiva saint and poet, one of the sixty-three Nayanmars and one of the four counted most important among them. The Concise Encyclopedia of Hinduism places him in the eighth century CE and says he was born at the small town of Tirunavalur, the son of Sadaiyanar and Isaijnaniyar, and was given the name Nambi Aruran. Adopted young by the local king Narasinga Munaiyaraiyar, he was about to marry when Shiva appeared disguised as an old brahmin and claimed him as his slave, and he became an ardent devotee of Shiva. He made a long pilgrimage to Shaiva shrines, had two wives, Paravaiyar and Sangiliyar, and is said to have departed for the world of Shiva at the temple of Tiruvanjaikkalam. His songs belong to the Tevaram and are still sung in Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.
