Unjami Festival

Observances

Unjami, also called Ungami, is an annual Ryukyuan religious festival held in the seventh lunar month in communities including Shioya and Iheya, giving thanks toward the sea for the harvest and safety of the community. It is conducted under noro leadership, one of the calendar rites that keeps utaki worship a living yearly practice rather than a historical description of one. Facts
Reckoning
Date RuleSourced to the subject's own account
Communities that keep Unjami date it by the old lunisolar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar Okinawa has otherwise followed since the Meiji era, so its actual Gregorian date is recalculated from the lunar cycle each year rather than falling on a fixed day, typically landing somewhere in late summer to early autumn. 1
