All Initiatory Grades

Named ranks within the grade ladders of Western esoteric orders, the sequence of titles a member passes through as they advance within a particular system's structure. An entry gives the grade's name and, where the source distinguishes it, the order it belongs to, recorded as structure rather than as the content of any initiation. Nothing about what a grade transmits or how it is conferred is described here; the entries record only that the rank exists and where it sits in its order's sequence.

What an Initiatory Grade Entry Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

An initiatory grade entry records a specific, named rank or degree within an organized initiatory system, Freemasonry's Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason among the best documented, through which a member advances by a formal process the organization itself controls. Margaret Jacob's study of Freemasonry situates these grades within real, documented eighteenth century lodges rather than treating them as timeless ritual forms with no traceable institutional history.

An entry records a grade's documented name and its place within its own system's sequence, which body or rite actually confers it, and what published, non secret scholarship records about its general character and purpose, since a grade's structural place in a system, an early foundational rank or a later, more advanced one, is itself a documented, checkable fact distinct from its specific ritual content.

Consistent with how this atlas treats any tradition's closed or restricted material, an initiatory grade entry describes a grade's documented history and its place within its organization from published scholarship, never reproducing or instructing in restricted ritual content itself, since description and instruction are different acts and this type is written to the same discipline that governs every closed or initiatory practice recorded here.

Historians and the Origins of Organized Freemasonry

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Andrew Prescott and Susan Mitchell Sommers revisit the earliest documented years of organized English Freemasonry directly against the surviving lodge records themselves, correcting popular accounts that had grown up around the tradition's origin with claims the actual documentary record does not support, a caution any careful history of an initiatory system has to apply.

Their work shows that even a comparatively well documented system like Freemasonry, with real minute books and membership records surviving from its earliest organized period, still carries popular claims about its own founding that outrun what those records actually show, a distinction between a tradition's own origin story and its checkable documentary history that an entry keeps recorded separately.

That same discipline applies across every system an initiatory grade entry might describe. An entry records what surviving documentary evidence actually establishes about when a grade or a system of grades first appeared and how it developed, distinct from any later, more dramatic origin claim a tradition may have grown around itself, checked against real historical sources rather than repeated as settled fact. Where the record is thinner than Freemasonry's own, the entry says so plainly rather than borrowing a better documented system's certainty.
