Demotic is the late stage of the Egyptian language and, more precisely, the cursive script devised for it around the seventh century BCE, used for administration, contracts and literature into the Roman period. It carries the Demotic magical papyri, a body of ritual texts that sit alongside the Greek magical papyri and sometimes within the same manuscripts, which is why it matters to the study of ancient ritual practice out of proportion to its literary bulk. It is one of the three scripts on the Rosetta Stone, alongside hieroglyphs and Greek, and Coptic succeeded it, written in Greek letters.

A Script for the Everyday, and Then for the Gods
Demotic is both a stage of the Egyptian language and, more precisely, the highly cursive script devised for it around the seventh century BCE out of the earlier hieratic. It was made for speed and for volume, and its first use was administrative: contracts, receipts, letters, tax records and court documents, in a hand so abbreviated that individual signs are frequently unrecognisable outside their usual groupings.
Mark Depauw's companion to the field sets out the scale of what survives and the difficulty of reading it, which is why Demotic studies remained a specialism long after hieroglyphic Egyptian had been opened up. The Rosetta Stone carries Demotic as its middle register, between hieroglyphs and Greek, and it was the Demotic text that was deciphered first.
What began as a bureaucratic hand became literary and then religious. Demotic carries narrative cycles about the magician Setne Khaemwaset and about Inaros, wisdom instructions, and a substantial body of ritual and magical material. The Greek Magical Papyri, edited by Hans Dieter Betz, include spells in which Demotic and Greek alternate within a single text and sometimes within a single procedure, which is direct evidence of how the two traditions were used together by the same practitioners.
The Last Egyptian Written in Egyptian Letters
Demotic was the ordinary written Egyptian of the country for roughly a thousand years, through the Late Period, the Persian occupations, the Ptolemies and into Roman rule. Its decline is documented with unusual precision. Greek displaced it in administration after the Roman conquest, its use narrowed to temple contexts, and the latest known Demotic inscription was cut at Philae in the middle of the fifth century of the common era, within a few decades of the last hieroglyphic one at the same temple.
What replaced it was Coptic, the same language written in Greek letters with a handful of signs borrowed from Demotic for sounds Greek did not have. That handover is the reason Egyptian survives in liturgical use today: a Christian community adopted the alphabet of the empire and kept the language underneath it.
For the atlas, Demotic matters as a religious source in two directions at once. It preserves temple ritual, priestly instruction and magical practice from the period when Egyptian religion was under pressure and was defending itself, and it records the ordinary transactions of the temples as institutions, their leases, their endowments and their disputes. Very little else lets a reader watch a religion working as an economy and as a devotion within the same archive.
