Tin is the metal of Jupiter, a soft, silvery-white metal, low-melting and easily worked, that alloys generously, hardening copper into bronze and coating other metals against corrosion. Bent sharply it gives the faint creak called the tin cry. Its readiness to combine and its part in making bronze, the metal of kings, linked it to expansive, benevolent Jupiter, greatest of the planets. Jovian in nature, it corresponds to Thursday, to the liver, and to the themes of abundance, growth, authority, and good fortune; in the alchemical scheme it stands as one of the seven planetary metals, the genial giant among them.

Tin, the Metal of Jupiter

Tin is the metal of Jupiter in the classical scheme, and of the seven pairings it is the least self-evident, resting more on the logic of the system than on any obvious resemblance. The alchemists knew tin as Jupiter and gave it the planet's symbol; alchemically it was regarded as a relatively soft, low and imperfect metal, and its distinctive property is the faint creaking sound, the tin cry, made when a bar is bent, caused by the crystal structure deforming.

Tin's true historical importance is as the essential alloying metal: added to copper it makes bronze, the alloy that names an age and that armed and equipped the ancient world, and the long-distance trade in tin, from Cornwall and elsewhere to the metal-working centres of the Mediterranean, was one of the earliest large-scale commodity networks. Jupiter's associations of expansion, abundance and benevolence attach to tin in the astrological-alchemical tradition, though tin's humble practical character makes it one of the quieter members of the planetary seven.

Tin, the Traded Metal

Tin has the thinnest symbolic literature of the seven, and the reason is geological. Workable tin ore is rare and very unevenly distributed, so tin was almost never a local metal. It was a traded one, moving from Cornwall, Brittany, Iberia and Central Asia to bronze-working centres that could not manage without it. Herodotus writes of the Cassiterides, the tin islands, as somewhere at the edge of the known world that he cannot place, and their identification is still unsettled.

That trade is the substance of tin's importance. Bronze is copper with roughly a tenth part tin, an entire age is named after the alloy, and so the metal hardest to obtain was the one that decided whether a society could arm and equip itself. The routes that carried it are among the earliest evidence for organised long-distance exchange in Europe.

Its own attributes in the tradition are mostly borrowed from Jupiter rather than observed in the metal. Tin is soft, light, low-melting and dull. The one property the alchemical writers reliably single out is the cry of tin, the audible creak a bar gives when it is bent, caused by the crystal structure deforming. Where a working tradition uses tin directly it is usually as a substitute: tin foil standing in for silver, pewter for the plate of a household that could not afford better.

The atlas records the Jupiter pairing because the sources are unanimous on it, and notes that the unanimity reflects the tidiness of a seven-and-seven scheme rather than a strong independent tradition attached to the metal.
