HumanLight, 23 December

HumanLight falls on the twenty third of December, the date this rule records, a modern secular observance created specifically to give humanist and other nonreligious families a winter season celebration of their own, positioned deliberately in the same late December window as Christmas and, most years, Hanukkah. The holiday originated in the early two thousands, promoted by humanist organizations seeking a positive, forward looking observance distinct from the explicitly nonreligious tone of a Christmas alternative built mainly in opposition to religious content, aiming instead to center values such as reason, compassion and hope for the future on their own terms.

Unlike most entries on this atlas's calendar, HumanLight has no textual basis in scripture, no computus and no inherited folk custom behind it, since its date, its themes and its very existence were all decided deliberately by the humanist organizations that founded it rather than emerging gradually from older practice. That makes it one of the clearest examples on the calendar of a modern, intentionally constructed observance rather than an ancient one merely given fixed dating, and its continued observance today remains concentrated within organized humanist and Ethical Culture communities rather than the wider public awareness that older winter holidays carry.
