A Roman Catholic religious institute of brothers, not priests, founded in Waterford, Ireland in 1802 by Edmund Rice to educate poor children, which grew into a worldwide network of schools before becoming, from the 1990s onward, one of the religious orders most associated with the clerical and institutional child abuse scandals in Irish and other English speaking Catholic school systems.

Settlement Total
16,500,000 1
The Christian Brothers Institute and Christian Brothers of Ireland Inc, the order's two North American legal entities, reached a bankruptcy settlement of more than 16.5 million dollars in 2013 with more than 400 survivors of sexual abuse at Christian Brothers schools across the United States and Canada, who were treated as unsecured creditors in the proceeding, per Irish Times reporting. 16.5 million dollars is recorded as a documented floor. This is the North American settlement figure alone; it does not cover the order's separate Irish redress contributions or its worldwide holdings, which are not consolidated into one published total.
Response Policy Adopted
The Congregation published child protection policies and procedures as Keeping Children Safe in 2009, updated in 2010 as Keeping Children Safe: Safeguarding Children, established a Safeguarding Management Committee in 2011, and issued a further revision, Keeping Children Safe: Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults, in 2013, per the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland's own practice review. 2
Recorded from the National Board's Ireland focused review; this atlas has not verified whether the Congregation's other provinces outside Ireland adopted comparable policies on the same timeline.
