Sik Sik Yuen was founded in 1921 by the Daoist priests Liang Ren'an and his son Liang Jun, who had established an altar for preaching in Wan Chai after arriving in Hong Kong in 1915. That year they built the Wong Tai Sin Temple in Chuk Yuen, Kowloon, founding Sik Sik Yuen as the organization to manage it. The organization was formally registered as a charity in 1965, more than four decades later.
Its own faith honours the Three Teachings together, Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, with Taoist deities, the Buddha and Confucius all venerated at Wong Tai Sin Temple, though standard reference accounts of religion in Hong Kong classify the organization as Taoist. A formal Board of Directors was established to govern it, and in 2006 the board appointed the organization's first abbot to manage religious affairs specifically.
Today Sik Sik Yuen continues to administer Wong Tai Sin Temple, one of Hong Kong's best known places of worship, under that board and abbot governance structure, more than a century after the two priests first built it. The organization's own account of its faith describes its blended veneration of Taoist deities, the Buddha and Confucius as a deliberate feature rather than an accident of history, even as outside reference works settle on a single tradition label for it.
