The Instructions of Ptahhotep is presented as the counsel of an elderly vizier of the Old Kingdom pharaoh Djedkare Isesi to his son and successor, teaching maat, right conduct and social order, through maxims on speech, humility, justice and the proper exercise of authority. Surviving in the Middle Kingdom Papyrus Prisse, it is among the oldest substantially complete works of Egyptian wisdom literature, part of the same didactic tradition, the sebayt, that later produced the Instruction of Amenemope.

Set in the reign of the Fifth Dynasty pharaoh Djedkare Isesi, roughly the twenty fifth to twenty fourth century BCE; the earliest surviving copy, the Prisse Papyrus, dates from the Middle Kingdom. 1

The text is dramatically set in the Old Kingdom, in the reign of Djedkare Isesi, but its oldest surviving copies are Middle Kingdom manuscripts several centuries later, and Egyptologists disagree over how much of the wording is original to the claimed Old Kingdom setting versus a Middle Kingdom composition using an Old Kingdom frame. The span given here runs from the dramatic setting to the earliest surviving copies.
