The Death of Julius Caesar (Vincenzo Camuccini, 1806)

Painting

Vincenzo Camuccini's The Death of Julius Caesar, a Neoclassical history painting completed in 1806, depicts the assassination of Julius Caesar in the Senate on the Ides of March, 44 BC. Caesar, in red and yellow garments, is shown at the moment of attack, stabbed by conspirators in white robes as further figures in green and blue join the assault, while onlookers surrounding the group react with shock and scatter. Commissioned in 1793 by Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry, the painting outlasted its patron, who died in 1803 before payment, and Camuccini sold the finished work to Joachim Murat in 1807. Praised for its sober grandeur and archaeological accuracy, achieved after three years of study of antique models and consultation with leading archaeologists, it has been held at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples since 1864.
