The pantheon of Palmyra, the caravan city of the Syrian desert, headed by the triad of Bel, the sky and cosmic order god whose temple dominated the city until its 2015 destruction, and his two attendant gods Yarhibol, the sun and oracle of a nearby spring, and Aglibol, the moon. Palmyrene religion drew on Mesopotamian, Aramaic and Arab strands alike and is known mainly through the city's abundant bilingual Palmyrene Aramaic and Greek inscriptions, dedicatory reliefs and temple architecture.
