Before the pilgrimage to the Haifa and Acre holy places, which this atlas also covers, was formally established, the ordained Bahai pilgrimage was to two houses: the House of the Bab in Shiraz and the House of Baha'u'llah in Baghdad. Both later became inaccessible, the Baghdad house seized by hostile parties in the 1920s and the Shiraz house destroyed in 1979, and Shoghi Effendi clarified that visiting the accessible shrines around Haifa and Acre now fulfills the same pilgrimage obligation, making this historic route the earlier, now largely unwalkable, predecessor to the pilgrimage practiced today.
