Ancient Greek Religion

Delos, Samothrace and the Ionian sanctuaries are among the principal sites of Greek religious practice.

Ancient Greek Religion names the sacrificial, festival and oracular tradition of the poleis.

The bay laurel is the tree of Apollo and the wreath of the Pythia at Delphi.

Greek colonies ringed the sea from the seventh century BCE, and a shrine of Achilles stood on the island of Leuke off the Danube mouth.

The tradition's liturgical, scriptural or ancestral language belongs to this family.

Its offering lists name Greek gods five centuries before Homer.

The Seleucid crown's religious reforms rededicated the Second Temple's altar to a syncretic cult identified with Zeus Olympios, and Jerusalem's Hellenizing faction that supported Seleucid rule had adopted Greek religious and cultural practice; the revolt was fought against this imposed cult as much as against Seleucid political rule.

Alexander's campaigns carried Greek cult east from Macedon.

Greek colonization planted sanctuaries to Apollo, Artemis and Demeter the length of the sea

A modern reconstruction rather than a continuous survival: the ancient cult ended, and Hellenismos is rebuilt from texts, inscriptions and archaeology rather than transmitted practice.

Greek practice read the risings and settings of named stars as the farmer's and sailor's calendar, as Hesiod does with the Pleiades, and Greek astronomers gave the constellations the myths and the catalogue that the Western tradition inherited.

The five ages of humankind are described in Hesiod's Works and Days, a foundational text of Ancient Greek Religion.

Diogenes lived and worked within the Greek civic and religious world of Corinth and Athens; ancient testimony and modern scholarship describe him as broadly sceptical toward conventional religious observance. A later legend has him consulting Apollo's oracle at Delphi to set his life's mission, but scholarship regards that story as apocryphal and inconsistent with his general scepticism.

Heraclitus inherited the hereditary title and civic office of king (basileus) of the Ionians at Ephesus, per Diogenes Laertius, and is said to have ceded it to his brother rather than hold it. His surviving fragments criticize the mythological authority of Homer and Hesiod and identify the divine with the natural order, the Logos, rather than with the conventional pantheon, a stance ancient testimony and modern scholarship treat as a real departure from mainstream Greek religious thought.

In the Republic, Books II and III, Plato argues that the traditional stories of Homer and Hesiod misrepresent the gods by attributing to them deceit, strife and immoral conduct, and proposes that poetry describing the gods falsely should be censored from the education of citizens. He does not reject the gods themselves; his objection is to specific inherited narratives about them, and his own later dialogues, including the Timaeus, develop an explicitly theological cosmology built around a divine craftsman, so his relationship to Greek religious tradition is a reforming critique of its content rather than a rejection of divinity.

Socrates was tried and executed at Athens in 399 BCE on formal charges of impiety (asebeia) and corrupting the youth, centered on the claim that he did not recognize the gods the city recognized and introduced new divinities of his own, principally his personal daimonion, an inner divine sign. Plato's and Xenophon's accounts both have him profess piety and describe divine signs guiding his conduct, so ancient testimony and modern scholarship read him as reworking rather than rejecting Athenian religion, a reworking the city's own jury found intolerable enough to convict him.
