Sitta min Shawwāl

Dietary Practices

Sitta min Shawwal, the six days of Shawwal, is a voluntary fast observed on six days during Shawwal, the month immediately following Ramadan, based on a hadith in which Muhammad states that fasting Ramadan and following it with six days in Shawwal counts as fasting the entire year. All four Sunni schools of jurisprudence classify the practice as an emphasized sunnah, and it is widely observed in West African Muslim communities, particularly in northern Nigeria and Niger, following the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
