A Kufan reader far better known as one of the most prolific hadith transmitters of his generation. His own reading survives only in citation rather than continuous recitation, an instructive contrast between standing as a hadith narrator and standing as a canonical reader.

Al-Amash, Hadith Transmitter and Shadhdh Reader
Sulayman al-A'mash, recorded here under the transliteration Al-Amash, was among the most prolific transmitters of hadith in the Kufan school of the early second Islamic century, and the qira'at literature separately credits him with a reading of his own, recorded here with Kufa as its reading centre and shadhdh as its standing, outside both the seven readings Ibn Mujahid selected and the further three Ibn al-Jazari added to complete the ten.
As with the other shadhdh readers in this register, no continuous chain of professional reciters transmitted al-A'mash's reading forward as a living recitation practice; it is recorded here as surviving in scholarly citation rather than as a reading that is still taught and studied. That al-A'mash was, by a wide margin, one of the best attested transmitters in the hadith literature of his generation makes the contrast instructive: reliability as a transmitter of hadith and standing as a canonical reader of the Quran rested on separate, only partly overlapping tests. Ibn al-Jazari's later framework for the canonical ten required, alongside a trustworthy chain, conformity to an Uthmanic codex and to Arabic grammar, and continuous transmission by reciters specifically, rather than by hadith transmitters generally; a name eminent in one register did not automatically carry canonical standing in the other. Al-A'mash's reading is studied today as a documented variant rather than recited as a living transmission.
