Al-Yazidi al-Basri

Yahya al-Yazidi occupies an unusual double position in the qira'at literature. Classical sources identify him as the intermediate transmitter through whom both of Abu Amr al-Basri's seven canon riwayat, carried onward by al-Duri and al-Susi, reach their own place in the transmitted chain; and separately, al-Yazidi is credited with a reading of his own, recorded here with Basra as its centre and shadhdh as its standing.

The distinction between the two roles is exactly the distinction between a transmission chain and an independent reading. As a link in Abu Amr's chain, al-Yazidi's role is preserved inside readings that count among the seven and are recited today. As the source of his own reading, he stands outside that canon: no continuous line of professional reciters carried al-Yazidi's own variants forward as a living recitation, so it is recorded, like the other shadhdh readings, as surviving in scholarly citation rather than as an actively taught recitation. Ibn al-Jazari's later framework for the canonical ten turned on an unbroken chain of named reciters together with conformity to an Uthmanic codex and to Arabic grammar; a reading known only through report sits outside that framework regardless of how central its source was to a canonical line elsewhere. Al-Yazidi's case makes that distinction unusually visible: the same scholar is inside the canon as a transmitter and outside it as a reader.
