Each entry records the tradition the realm belongs to, its place in the wider cosmos, and who is said to dwell there or pass through it. Realms are the geography of the mythic and metaphysical world, where the gods live, where the dead go, what lies above and below the ordinary world, and how the levels are joined by a world-tree, a mountain, a bridge or a river. How Cosmologies Differ Traditions disagree about how many realms there are, how they are arranged, and what determines which a soul reaches. Some picture a simple upper and lower world with the living between; others build elaborate storeys of heavens and hells, or wheels of rebirth through many planes. The entries report each scheme on its own terms. The realms group by kind (heavens, underworlds, planes and worlds), so a reader can compare, say, the underworlds of many traditions side by side. The largest of these structures connect outward to the section on Cosmology & Realms. All RealmsFilter Results79 entriesSacred ToAllEreshkigal (1)Hades (1)Hel (1)Indra (1)Izanami (1)Mictecacihuatl (1)Mictlantecuhtli (1)Odin (1)Osiris (2)Vishnu (1)Yama (1)Yanluo (1)Originates In LanguageAllAncient Greek (4)Avestan (1)Biblical Hebrew (3)Classical Arabic (3)Classical Chinese (1)Classical Nahuatl (4)Finnish (1)Japanese (2)K'iche' Maya (1)Latin (3)Middle Egyptian (3)Middle Irish (2)Middle Persian (1)Middle Welsh (1)Mishnaic Hebrew (1)Old French (1)Old Norse (13)Punjabi (1)Sanskrit (8)LanguageAllAncient Greek (4)Avestan (1)Biblical Hebrew (3)Classical Arabic (3)Classical Chinese (1)Finnish (1)Japanese (2)Kiche Maya (1)Latin (3)Middle Egyptian (3)Middle Irish (2)Middle Persian (Pahlavi) (1)Middle Welsh (1)Mishnaic Hebrew (1)Nahuatl (4)Old French (1)Old Norse (13)Punjabi (1)Sanskrit (8)Tibetan (2)Doctrinal StatusAllAttested (73)Debated (5)Defined and binding within this tradition (1)Rejected, or not held, within this tradition (1)Belongs To TraditionAllAncient Egyptian Religion (3)Ancient Greek Religion (4)Aztec Religion (4)Bahá’í Faith (1)Buddhism (6)Celtic Paganism (5)Chinese Folk Religion (4)Christianity (3)Finnish Paganism (Suomenusko) (1)Haitian Vodou (1)Hinduism (3)Inuit Religion (1)Islam (3)Jainism (1)Judaism (4)Kongo Religion (1)Latter Day Saint Movement (1)Maya Religion (1)Mesopotamian Religion (1)New Age (1)Norse Paganism (13)Polynesian Religion (3)Roman Religion (1)Shinto (2)Sikhism (1)Slavic Native Faith (Rodnovery) (2)Spiritualism (1)Taoism (1)Theosophy (1)Wicca (1)Yorùbá Religion (Ifá) (1)Zoroastrianism (3)Attested InAllGuru Granth Sahib (1)Popol Vuh (1)Talmud (1)Tanakh (1)Attested In RegionAllMesopotamia (1)Kind of realmAllAztec Afterlife Heavens (1)Biblical and Islamic Hells (4)Celtic Otherworlds and Arthurian Realms (5)Chinese and Japanese Underworlds (2)Egyptian and Mesopotamian Underworlds (2)Greek and Roman Underworlds (3)Heavens of the Abrahamic Faiths (3)Heavens of the Classical and Northern Afterlife (4)Heavens of the Indic Religions (6)Hidden Lands and Bridges (2)Indic and Buddhist Hells (2)Intermediate States and Occult Planes (5)Japanese, African and Other Heavens (2)Norse, Finnish and Slavic Underworlds (2)Other Mythic Worlds and Paradise Lands (2)The Nine Worlds of Norse Cosmology (9)Underworlds of the Americas, Africa and Polynesia (6)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 79AaruHeavensAbha KingdomHeavensAdlivunUnderworldsAlfheimWorldsAnnwnWorldsÁsgardWorldsAsphodel MeadowsUnderworldsAvalonWorldsAviciUnderworldsBifröstPlanesCamelotWorldsCelestial KingdomHeavensChichihuacuauhcoHeavensDiyuUnderworldsDuatUnderworldsElysiumHeavensFengduUnderworldsFirdausHeavensFólkvangrHeavensGehennaUnderworldsGinenWorldsHadesUnderworldsHamistaganPlanesHeavenHeavensHelheimUnderworldsHellUnderworldsHuangquanUnderworldsIrkallaUnderworldsJahannamUnderworldsJannahHeavensJötunheimWorldsKalungaUnderworldsMag MellWorldsMictlanUnderworldsMidgardWorldsMuspelheimWorldsNarakaUnderworldsNavUnderworldsNiflheimWorldsOrunHeavensPenglaiWorldsPoWorldsPulotuUnderworldsPurgatoryPlanesRarohengaUnderworldsSach KhandHeavensShambhalaPlanesSheolUnderworldsSiddhashilaHeavensSukhavati (The Pure Land)HeavensSvargaHeavensSvartalfheim (Nidavellir)WorldsTakamagaharaHeavensTartarusUnderworldsThe Akashic RecordsPlanesThe Astral PlanePlanesThe BardoPlanesThe Garden of EdenWorldsThe Hall of Two TruthsUnderworldsThe House of LiesUnderworldsThe House of SongHeavensThe Seven HeavensHeavensThe SummerlandHeavensThe Ten Courts of DiyuUnderworldsThe Thirty AethyrsPlanesThe Underworld of Dis Pater and ProserpinaUnderworldsTir na nOgWorldsTlalocanHeavensTonatiuh IchanHeavensTrayastrimsaHeavensTuonelaUnderworldsTushitaHeavensVaikunthaHeavensValhallaHeavensVanaheimWorldsVyrajHeavensWell of UrdWorldsXibalbaUnderworldsYomiUnderworldsSources1.
