The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire centred on Constantinople during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, surviving the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century until the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire in 1453. The source notes that Constantine I legalised Christianity and moved the capital to Constantinople, that Theodosius I made Christianity the state religion, and that its citizens called themselves Romans. Rites, liturgies, orders and texts are placed here when they arose in the Byzantine world.
