The mountain region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, divided by the Greater Caucasus range into a northern zone, home to the Circassian, Abkhaz, Ossetian, Chechen and Ingush peoples, and a southern zone comprising Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Its isolated highland valleys sheltered some of the last living pre-Christian and pre-Islamic religious systems in Europe and West Asia into the modern era.
