Iraq, officially the Republic of Iraq, historically known in the west as Mesopotamia, is the country in West Asia bordered by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Jordan and Syria, with Baghdad as its capital. The source dates the rise of early cities between the Tigris and Euphrates to the sixth millennium BC, naming Sumer, Akkad, Babylonia and Assyria, and records that after the Arab conquest of the seventh century Iraq became the metropole of the Abbasid Caliphate with Baghdad a hub of the Islamic Golden Age. Schools, sects, sacred sites and texts are placed here when they arose in the modern country, beside the older Mesopotamia region of this atlas.
