Albania's Communist government under Enver Hoxha banned all religious practice in 1967, declaring the country the world's first officially atheist state. Mosques, Orthodox and Catholic churches and Bektashi tekkes were closed, converted to secular use or destroyed; clergy were imprisoned or executed, and possessing religious texts or objects, or even giving a child a religious name, was criminalized. The ban held until the Communist government's fall in 1990.
