Capuciati

Catholic Religious Orders and Congregations
Origin from 1182

The Capuciati were a Catholic confraternity founded in late twelfth-century France with a peacekeeping mission, taking their name from caputium, the distinctive white hood members wore as a mark of identity. The movement began in 1182 at Le Puy, France, tracing its origin to Durand, a local carpenter who reported a vision of the Virgin Mary instructing him to found an organization whose members would maintain peace while wearing white hoods and medals bearing the inscription Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world give us peace. Members took vows against false oaths, blasphemy, dice games, tavern visits and expensive clothing, and pledged to restore and maintain peace throughout France; the confraternity spread rapidly south of the Loire River and gained prominence cooperating with French royal forces against mercenary bands known as Routiers in 1183. Its existence was brief: the nobility and mercenaries it opposed appear to have suppressed the movement, though the precise circumstances of its end remain unclear.
