Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur

Catholic Religious Orders and Congregations
Origin from 1804

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SNDdeN) are a Catholic teaching congregation founded in 1804 in Amiens, France, by Julie Billiart and Francoise Blin de Bourdon, known in religion as Mother St Joseph, to provide education to the poor; opposition from local church authorities led the community to relocate to Namur, Belgium, in 1809. Members undertake every form of Christian apostolate, from universities and primary schools to hospitals, spirituality centers and work for peace and justice, and by the early twenty-first century the congregation was present across five continents in about 20 countries, headquartered in Rome under a Congregational Leader with roughly 1,200 members recorded in 2017. Julie Billiart was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1969, and the congregation established Notre Dame Mission Volunteers-AmeriCorps in 1992.
