Origin from 1816
The Society of Mary, also known as the Marists, is a Catholic religious congregation of pontifical right founded in Cerdon, France, by Jean-Claude Colin and recognized by an apostolic brief on 29 April 1836. It comprises five branches, the Marist Fathers as its ordained priests, the Marist Brothers as non-ordained religious, Marist Sisters, Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, and a Third Order of Mary for lay members, united under the motto Sub Mariae Nomine, Under Mary's Name. The society emphasizes Marian spirituality and a charism of humble, inconspicuous service it describes as living and working hidden and unknown in the world. It operates from a General Motherhouse in Rome with about 500 members across multiple continents engaged in education, missionary and pastoral roles.
