Sulpicians

Catholic Religious Orders and Congregations
Origin from 1641

The Society of Priests of Saint Sulpice, known as the Sulpicians, is a Catholic society of apostolic life of pontifical right for men, founded in 1641 by Father Jean-Jacques Olier, who gathered a few priests and seminarians around him at Vaugirard, a suburb of Paris, in the final months of that year. Olier, shaped by the French School of Spirituality and mentored by Vincent de Paul and Charles de Condren, sought to reform priestly formation at a time when the French priesthood suffered from low morale and academic deficits, and the society took its name from the Church of Saint Sulpice in Paris where it was founded. Its primary mission is educating priests and seminarians, and it currently operates in France, Canada and the United States with about 243 priest members as of 2020, headquartered in Paris.
