Society of the Sacred Heart

Catholic Religious Orders and Congregations
Origin from 1800

The Society of the Sacred Heart, known by the initials RSCJ, is a centralized Catholic religious institute of consecrated life of pontifical right for women, founded on 21 November 1800 in Amiens, France, by Madeleine Sophie Barat in the aftermath of the French Revolution to provide girls' education through a religious life simplified enough to be compatible with teaching work. Its first convent opened at Amiens in 1801, and Pope Leo XII granted formal papal approval in 1826; the society expanded rapidly across Europe and internationally and by 2024 operated schools in 41 countries with more than 1,400 members, headquartered in Rome under Superior General Sister Barbara Dawson. The society holds NGO status as a United Nations special consultant, and in 2018 established the Cor Unum Scholarship for African American students in acknowledgment of the congregation's own historical involvement in slavery.
