Teutonic Order

Christian Military and Chivalric Orders
Origin from 1190

The Teutonic Order was established around 1190 in Acre, in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as a fraternity founded by German merchants from Bremen and Lubeck during the siege of Acre to aid Christian pilgrims and run hospitals, and was formally recognised in 1192 by Pope Celestine III under the Augustinian Rule before transforming into a military order around 1198. As a Catholic religious institution that also functioned as a military society, it supported crusading efforts in the Holy Land and took part in the Northern Crusades in Eastern Europe. It has been purely religious since 1810, was outlawed by Nazi Germany in 1938 and re-established in 1945, and today continues as a charitable and ceremonial body headquartered in Vienna, conferring limited honorary knighthoods under its Grand Master.
