Satpanth is a name given to the followers of Pir Sadardin, a Shia Ismaili dai who founded the Satpanth tariqa roughly six hundred years ago and taught tolerance, perennialism and the syncretism of religions, with a particular emphasis on blending Islam and Hinduism; he died in 1520. Centered mainly in the northwest Indian regions of Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan, with a presence also in Maharashtra, its followers retain Hindu names and symbols such as Om and the swastika, observe Hindu religious occasions, and identify variably as Hindu or as Muslim Shia Ismaili, reciting devotional hymns called Ginans composed by medieval pirs as their central sacred texts.
