The Sea Organization, known as the Sea Org, is the senior staff echelon of the Church of Scientology's structure, founded by L. Ron Hubbard on August 12, 1967, originally as a seagoing operation using a fleet of ships before it moved onto land in 1975. All of Scientology's management organizations are staffed exclusively by Sea Org members, who join through a symbolic billion year pledge and keep naval uniforms and ranks left over from the group's maritime origins. David Miscavige currently holds the active rank of Captain, while the rank of Commodore remains permanently reserved for Hubbard, whom Scientology teaches will one day return. Critics and scholars have described the Sea Org as a totalitarian organization marked by intensive surveillance, forced labor and punishment, with members reportedly working around 100 hours a week under a disciplinary system that includes the Rehabilitation Project Force, and former members have brought lawsuits alleging human trafficking, coerced abortions and child labor.
